"Spring Quarterly Meeting 2010"
Following the Quarterly Meeting May 4, 2010, member Karen Schueler demonstrated various ways to paint silk fabric.
She has been painting silk since 1991, and often uses the painted silk as background to her embroideries. Several samples of her work using painted and dyed silk combined with embroidery were on display at the meeting.
Three works employing painted silk and embroidery by Karen were selected for the 19th National EGA Exhibit currently traveling across the nation.
Karen stretched several pieces of silk stretched onto wooden frames and showed how to draw water based clear resist squeezed from small bottles to outline areas that are then filled with the brightly colored silk dyes using a brush.
After the paintings are dried and ironed, steam treatment is needed to set the dye. Alternatively, there are fabric paints suitable for silk that just need to be ironed to set the colors. Members were invited to try painting on the fabric at the end of her presentation.
