Class Description:
This is not a monogram class. This class is for all students who wish to add a name or quote to their beautifully stitched surface embroideries but who have been frustrated by their inability to stitch professional looking lettering. Many patterns for lettering in counted techniques are available to the stitcher but surface embroiderers have fewer options.
The material presented in this class will provide students with a method to use existing commonly available alphabets to personalize hand embroideries in a professional way. For a student with calligraphy experience, the same process can be used to transfer their own calligraphic lettering to fabric. Using a “cut and paste” method to arrange a personal sample of lettering on tracing paper, students will transfer the tracing to a piece of fabric. We will complete the class by discussing shading and stitch choices appropriate for the finished product. Sourcing other unusual non-copyright alphabets not used in class will be discussed. The teacher will display finished examples of embroideries where this method of lettering has been used in different ways and with different fibers to encourage students to “think outside of the box.”
Some suggestions for using the information offered in this class might include personalizing an embroidery for a new baby, commemorating a wedding with embroidery, adding a name to a crazy quilt block, making a nametag. We are only limited by our imaginations!
Students will leave this class with a small, personalized example of embroidered lettering that could be used to make a nametag or added to a crazy quilt block.

Embroidery: The Thread of History
October 5, 2018–January 6, 2019
History can be defined as a series of events that are remembered and preserved through time. This exhibition explores the use of embroidery as historical documents that can deepen our understanding of women’s lives. It considers how needlework has been used to remember the past, document the present, and look forward to the future.

Summer Report
Chapter members are surely enjoying their summer, and travel.
The Christmas in July program schedule for August 7 has been canceled. Everyone's out of town! Materials for the items will be available at the October quarterly.
Community Service: Watch for sewing dates to put together Mother's Helper cloth bags that will be given to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington. These cloth bags will be distributed to the mothers of premature babies who need to use breast pumps to collect milk for their tiny babies. Several stitching dates will be scheduled later this summer and early fall.
And there were wonderful show and tell items.

Show and Tell at the Winter Quarterly
A snowstorm delayed the first quarterly of the year until February 6.
We were treated to a presentation by Candance Perry, Curator of Collections of the Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center. She talked about Berlin Work and its similarities to other developing designs of the times.
We also enjoyed a great show-and-tell of finished projects.
Karen Schuler, Ann Warner, Melissa Levy, Judy Herdeg (in absentia), and Sue Scofield were installed as the 2018 officers.
